The Rottweiler : Centuries of Service
Published in Hardcover by Howell Book House (December, 1998)
Authors: Linda Michels and Catherine Thompson
Average review score:

wonderful book
this is the third book i have read on rottweilers. i have enjoyed every page of it. it is very easy to read and understand. the pictures are fabulous. the topics cover almost everything you would want to know about the rottweiler. the authors have many years of experience with rottweilers and give their advice, hints, and instructions on things such as showing and building a whelping box. i love this book and would recommend it to anyone interested in this breed from curiousity to expert.

Dedication To The Breed
We have 2 dogs... a Boxer and a Rottweiler. After I bought "The Boxer - Family Favorite" by the same publisher (Wiley & Sons), I decided I must have this one regarding my other favorite breed... the Rottweiler. A good looking hard cover book with 250+ pages of excellent info. Pictures adorn most pages. Topics include: History, breeding, basic care, health & symptoms, activities for you & your dog, training tips, size & incredible strength, enjoyment, and so much more. It is clearly evident that authors Thompson and Michels are dedicated to the breed. Anyone owning or considering the Rottweiler as a pet should have this book. I have half a dozen books on the breed and I find myself reaching for this one the most. Any dog-lover will admire all the pictures of these big beautiful animals and understandable print. A wonderful read.

Excellent Reading
One of the best books on the breed that I have ever read, written by two experts!

Sarah's Surrender

Loved It!
I absolutely loved this book... Loved it so much that I let a friend borrow it. Unfortunally that friend never gave it back :pout: And of course with my luck the book is out of print and I can't seem to find it for sale anywhere. I would definatly buy it again if given the chance. Anyone new to D/s should read this book as it gives a very personal overview of what it is like to be new to this lifestyle. At least that's my personal opinion... ::grins::

Loved It!!!!!
I'm new to this type of erotica and this book at times tantalized me, scared me, but pushed the right buttons. I'm only sorry to hear this is her only book. Can't wait for the next.

A MUST for beginning to understand the submissive's desires.
This is a superb book. The author has delved deeply into the mind and motivations of the s/m submissive and brought it to reality for her readers. The metamorphosis of Sarah, as she travels from her smug manipulative but unfulfilled persona, to realize her full desire and potential as the full-time beloved submissive of her Master is a feast for the senses. Claire Thompson describes scenes which pull you inside them as you live Sarah's growth with her. Not only did I buy a copy, but I got two more for friends who adored it as well. Don't miss it.

Savage Art: A Biography of Jim Thompson
Published in Paperback by Random House Trade Paperbacks (October, 1996)
Author: Robert Polito
Average review score:

The Definitive Bio on Thompson
If there was ever an American original, it's Jim Thompson. His dark and deranged world-view, expressed in a series of cheap paperbacks in the fifties and sixties, revels in the that part of the American psyche that we ignore and are afraid to look at. Polito's detailed bio explains where Thompson came from, and the events that molded him into the premier writer of American noir. Even if you aren't interested in Thompson and his work, this is an exquisite biography.

Amazing Detail and Research
I didn't think it was possible to write a full-scale biography of Thompson because of his scattered, secret life. But Polito has pulled off the seemingly impossible. He gathers together unexpected facts from obscure sources in places all over the country. He combines this with excellent, insightful analysis of this tortured writer's work. When I first read Thompson's novels back in the mid-'80's, it felt like my brain was being turned inside out. I was so astonished I went out and bought every one. Now thanks to Polito we can begin to understand the sources of the horror and the humanity of his novels.

Worth every penny
My only complaint about this honest and thorough bio is that Thompson was a lazy crybaby. His writing was inconsistent, as was his character. I loved every minute of this great life story.

Thompson Chain-Reference Study Bible New International Version: Handy Size
Published in Hardcover by B.B. Kirkbride Bible Company (June, 1993)
Author: Kirkbride Bible & Technology
Average review score:

The best Study Bible
I love the New King James Version, put out by Thomas Nelson, but I loath Thomas Nelson Bibles. This is how I happened upon the Thompson a few years ago as I was relieved to find a NKJV not made by T.N. I first bought an NKJV in bonded leather. After 2 years of very heavy use, I bought an NKJV in genuine leather, and later a handy size KJV in genuine. All three of these Bibles are wonderful in every way.
The Thompson Study system is very helpful and they've graciously spared us from a myriad of religious cliche and personal opinion. The page layout is smart. The Bible text actually fills the page and all study helps and references are relegated to the side margins. There are so many ways to use the studies and references, I am unable to number them here. The concordance is as extensive as any I've seen. The 14 maps are colorful and very well done. Simply put, it's a complete, Jesus-exalting study Bible designed with excellence.

The construction of these Bibles is equally impressive. The paper is just right--not too thick, not too thin. The print is dark and sharp. Their font is subtil and very appropriate for the Bible, if you ask me. The red words of Jesus are RED. They're not muddy brown; they're not pink; they're bright, deep, beautiful red. They are printed consistantly page to page, not some pages lighter or misprinted, as the Thomas Nelson folks are plagued by.

Now that I own three Thompsons, I feel about them the way a good ol' boy down in the South feels about shotguns. "I have more than I need, but not as many as I want!"

cheers
Excellent book and excellent condition. Excellent price for used book. Fonts are a bit small and its difficult to read.

Awsome Bible!
I have tried numerous study bibles over the past 25 years but none has been such a blessing as the Thompson Chain Reference Bible. The format is easy to follow, the chain reference system is magnificent, the concordance is a handy tool, even the maps are great.

This bible is, in my opinion, perhaps the most appropriate bible for anyone new to bible study. On the one hand, it is a bit overwhelming to learn ALL of the study tools; however, on the other hand, the cyclopedic reference in the back and the simple function of the chain references takes less than 5 minutes to learn and will guide the young student / new believer to answers to all those questions that just seem to arise every time they try to read a bible. "What does the bible say about XXXXX?", "What does God think about YYYYY?" ... cyclopedic lookup in seconds, answers ready and waiting. Gotta love it!

For the more serious bible student, the histories, backgrounds, chronologies, and flow of the bible come to life wonderfully in this bible also.

If you're looking for a study bible with commentary that tells you what the commentator believes to be true, this is NOT the bible for you ... but, if you're looking for a bible that will show you just what the bible itself says about a subject - minus the commentary, this bible is just what the doctor ordered.

Watch My Back: A Bouncer's Story
Published in Paperback by Paladin Press (July, 1995)
Author: Geoff Thompson
Average review score:

Exciting, funny, sad. This book has it all.
When I first came to the end of reading Watch My Back, I felt compelled to go right back to the start and read again. It isn't just a book about martial arts or bouncing - it is a book about life and the sort of fears and worries that we all have lurking within. And as with all of Geoff's other titles, there is something that we can all gain by reading them. Watch My Back really affected me and my life in many ways. Firstly, it made me realise that no matter who you are, we all have obsticals in life that can be overcome if we really want it. And secondly, it forced me to eventually meet and befriend Geoff, who is a great man. His advice has led me to try my hand at writing and I am now a published author myself. Watch My Back - simply superb!

A trip through adversity.
Geoff T. takes you on a ride through the torid storm that was his life 'on the door.' He opens up his heart and allows you to share in his dreams and his fears in one of the most honest accounts that I have ever read. He unfolds entire situations for you to read that help you to better understand just what a cruel, sadistic, egotistical world it is that we live in but also leaves room for humour. GT battles his own demons, describes the various opponents he has faced and shows not only one of the toughest and dedicated minds but also one that came to learn discipline and philosophy to get him out of the rut that he found himself in. A must for any doorman (bouncer) or wannabe but a compeling read for any member of the general public.

The truth can be as painful as the reality (for some!)
Geoff is a great author who has undergone a few changes since this book was released in the early part of the 90's. His books give you the truth about physical confrontation and how to react in certain situations. He has no qualms about stating weaknesses in the Martial Arts of today that have not moved with the times and can be downright unsafe for those who think that combat in the dojo/training hall is the same when hit with the scary reality of an assault which is never announced in the same way as taught in the gym. This books pulls no punches and is as real as you can get without immersing yourself in the same dangerous role of doorman. He has released an updated book which encompasses his other books "Bouncer" & "On the Door" as well as this in the one volume of "Watch my back". He has risen was above his many counterparts in the Martial Arts and is now a major influence to a great many people with his views and positive outlook on life . His books now show the futility of violence and show how the bigger man can walk away and hold his head high without letting the ego get in the way My advice is to get reading from this great man, his knowledge and advice could help you in many aspects of life from physical training to being a better person. The world needs more like him.......

Worry Wart Wes (Smarties Book Series, 2)
Published in Hardcover by Savor Publishing House (15 August, 2002)
Authors: Tolya L. Thompson, Juan R. Perez, and Tolya L. Thompson
Average review score:

Looking For Pastel Baby Blues, This Book Is Not For You
Worry Wart Wes, is definitely stressed. Tolya L. Thompson deals with the realities of today's children in bright, bold, and successful colors. The color draws the children in and keeps them wanting more. If you are looking for pastel baby blues in soothing colors in a book, then this book is not for you. The pictures are wonderful and almost realistic. Have you ever seen an appealing wart? Well you won't see it in this book either. The rhyme is designed to develop phonemic awareness, and it works. The children walk around repeating phrases in the book; which ultimately helps them retain and recognize words in the future. If your child doesn't sit through this story write the author and get some tips on how to utilize the book. The children are entertained until the end of the story, and always ask you to "READ IT AGAIN!"

Worry Wart Wes
In Worry Wart Wes, Ms. Thompson is able to capture the mind and imagination of young children, particularly when they are faced with everyday stress. She brings this to life with her words and rhymes and with the colorful and imaginative illustrations. The smartie series is a fun and creative means of helping children deal with physical and mental changes in their life

a reader in ny
I highly reccomend Tolya Thompson's books Loud Lips Lucy & Worry Wart Wes. Her unique rythmes are complimented by colorful & fun illustrations. The books are extremely entertaining as well as eductational. The smartie at the end of the book explaines the medical problem that her character has. This promotes health & awareness from a young age. I have never before read a childrens book which incorporates such important topics.

The Cancer Monologue Project
Published in Hardcover by MacAdam/Cage Publishing (October, 2002)
Authors: Tanya Taylor, Pamela Thompson, and Joanna Bull
Average review score:

Cancer and Intimacy
I have known a number of people with cancer, and I think I had close relationships with them. However, somehow I learned more about what really happens when people get cancer from this book than I have learned from suffering friends and family. The reality is so grave that I suppose the people I know did not want to bring me in to the pain. But the participants in these workshops feel free to unburden themselves and get specific and I have a more real view of the cancer experience now than I did before. The scathing and lonely vignettes about radiation really got to me, and while it's painful it's also better to know than not to know.

Triumph of the spirit.
When I read The Cancer Monologue Project, I made 30 new friends; each with their own very individual voice and outlook. They share a gruesome commonality, cancer, but something even stronger unites them. What I found most enlightening was the gratitude these survivors expressed for the very disease that brought them, or a loved one, to death's door. Wisdom, humility, and a deep appreciation for family seem to be the legacy of the pain, fear and degradation they endured. In celebrating life, these people made me laugh through my tears as they generously shared intimate details of their journey. I can't help feeling I've been given a primer on how to live my remaining years to their fullest; a gift from these extraordinary contributors.
I wholeheartedly recommend this book to read, and reread, and give to everyone you love.

exceptional book
I purchased this book as a gift for an uncle who has just been operated on for colon cancer after reading about it in the Oprah Winfrey magazine which she highly reccomended. After leafing through a story or two I wound up reading it cover to cover on the weekend before mailing it out. It really is an exceptionally moving work and will inspire anyone that reads it whether they have been touched by the disease, know someone who has (as we all have)or just needs to be reminded how precious life really is. I cannot wait to see what the authors bring us in the future.

After the Gate Bangs Shut

A Childhood Lost
After just a few pages you begin to feel for Jackie Brooks. He is a boy trying desperately to grow into a man, but with bad decisions and lack of guidance he lives a life many of us have or would have fallen into. You find yourself wanting to reach out to Jackie in the same way others have done in our lives. You will see yourself thru Jackies eyes, some of us were just lucky. Some of us were not so lucky. All of us have experienced the UNFAIRNESS of the world around us. Jackie brings this world and it's tribulations home to our very souls.

What was it about ?
A co-worker asked me what this book was about. At the time, I was about 150 pages into the book...I looked at her and was stunned to realize that i could not describe this book with only one summary. This book is about a lot of things and depending on what you take from it, may find more stories within than I did. What a great deal ! Normally,I would have had to buy 3 or 4 books to get the content I did out of this one.

One Man's Struggle for Self-Actualization
This is a compelling story about one boy's struggle to escape a dysfunctional home life. However through the influence of a friend, he was catapulted into a life of petty crime. Rather than finding a better life, young Jackie instead served a prison term. This book catalogs Jackie's trials through lost love and free life after the gate bangs shut. After his prison term, Jackie goes on the road to end his inner turmoil and finally find freedom. The style of this book resembles that of the talented Jack Keroauc in his famous novel,"On the Road". The audience will be engaged with the author's adept use of local color and the unforgettable characters he created. Can't wait for more from this very promising new author.

Creative propagation : a grower's guide
Published in Unknown Binding by Timber Press ()
Author: Peter Thompson
Average review score:

All the info you need to start propagating plants
I rated this book as four-star for this two reasons:

First, because I cannot understand why this book is printed in special glossy paper, if 80% of it is mostly text. And we know how special paper adds to price and that must be the reason why this book is quite expensive for my taste.

The second reason is that for a book with this price tag, I'd expect a lot more illustrations and maybe some real pictures, instead of drawings.

Now into the the good aspects! This book is solidly written and covers all aspects of plant propagation. From trees to flowers and bulbs, etc...

There is a good section on propagation from cuttings and all the info you need to start growing plants from seeds, which were my main objectives when I bought this book.

The stratification process of seeds in the refrigerator is also covered, as well as there are some very useful instructions about how should we properly long-term store our own seeds.

As someone said before, there is a very handy chart by the end of the book, with plenty of useful information on the propagation of most of the plants you'd ever think of propagating.

As I said before, I think this book is a bit expensive and not as illustrated as I wish it was, but overall I think it is a good investment for people interested in propagating plants.

It is the kind of complete book that you will keep in your shelf and go search for answers when more doubts arise, as you get more experienced in this loving art.

If you just want to propagate some plants or maybe grow some seeds, I'd also suggest Alan Toogood's book on growing, which is more simple than this one, but on the other hand has plenty of pictures and may be easier for a beginner to follow.

Creative Propagation
I am a gardener of many years who has tried propagating plants with some luck. This book is wonderful. On my first try last August (1999) I took about 30 azalea cuttings and every one of them "took". My problem now is what do I do with all of them. :) The propagation table at the end of the book (that lists plants alphabetically)is one of the best I've ever seen. It tells if a plant can be started by seed, cutting or divisions and what time of the year is best. I also did some hydrangeas (100% success) and some crepe myrtle (75%). I have already recommended this book to all my gardening friends and I recommend it to anyone who likes to be surrounded with lots of "plant babies". :)

Very Solid well thought out productive infomation
A must have if your a serious propagator or student looking for real answers. Easy to read, In conclusion a well rounded book that gets results.
